We will all head up to Firhill for the last game of the season this Saturday with the word IF on our lips. If Buchanan had been fit, if Archibald had been fit, if Steve Lovell, had had a pre-season, [just reading, he is the eighth top scorer of all time in the SPL] and if Paul Paton had a left foot! We would be attending a sell-out “Player of the Year” Dance in the evening as league champions. But it is not to be, so we will just have to wait till next season for it to be “Thistle’s year”

Ross County V Partick Thistle
Irn-Bru Scottish League 1st Division
Saturday 24th April 22, 2010
Victoria Park Dingwal
Reporter: Partickthedog(with assistance from weehonk)

After an entertaining but relatively quiet first half, the northern skies were transformed by a sub-glacial volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajokull proportions. By the time the dust had settled on a manic second half, Thistle had come back from behind to win 2-1, a new goalkeeping legend had been born and Ian McCall had enjoyed a Nick Clegg-like bounce in his personal popularity ratings.

Which felt longer, the 460 minutes since Thistle last scored a goal or the 330 minutes it took for the combined North West/Jordanhill supporters’ bus to travel from Maryhill Community Halls to Victoria Park, Dingwall? Your commentator has endured every second of both, but at least the latter did not spread over 32 days. Sadly, a fatal road accident on the A9 just north of Perth decreed a magical misery tour of spectacular scenery and snowlined mountain passes to places even the Starship Enterprise has never boldly gone (Monzie would be a great home for a Thistle supporter-Monzie Jags!).

The clock ticked on relentlessly and the schedule was further disrupted by the bus driver’s statutory rest period. No complaints at all about this (he has to stay legal and in a job and it was great to see him enjoying the game), but to have missed a long awaited Thistle goal due to a tachograph would have been the final insult!

The chance to applaud Ross County on to the pitch on their first return home after so wonderfully dumping Celtic out of the Scottish Cup was lost, but after the lightning dash from bus to ticket booth through turnstile to stand seat, it was a relief to discover that the score was still nil-nil.

A quick check of the teams revealed that Bryn Halliwell (who had performed more like Geri Halliwell against Raith Rovers) had been given his promised second opportunity to prove that he can fill the famous boots of Alan Rough, Craig Nelson, Nicky Walker, Kenny Arthur and Jonny Tuffey. Martin Corrigan, after his woeful midweek stint in central midfield, returned to right fullback in place of the injured Paul Paton. Maxi and Robbo brought their experience to the centre of defence, with Ryan (10, 4) Conroy on the left. Can Ian McCall be hoping to sign Conroy as otherwise there seems to be no rational explanation for continuing to play a loan signing when the benched Paddy Boyle was the obvious choice? Ryan had a tidy game, including a stylish nutmeg, but his deadball delivery was invariably shocking. Ross County had no need for a second defender.

Mark Corcoran and Chris Erskine were on the right and left respectively (though with numbers reversed to cause confusion), with Hodge and Rowson in between and Donnelly and Doohan up front. I assume that nothing too world-shattering took place in the first ten minutes. If you believe the BBC (Duke Gekwantala and all), Bryan Hodge hooked a shot wide of the post, but if you believe Tam the Bam, Kris Doolan glanced a header wide and Coco’s deflected shot was saved by McGovern…or maybe it all happened?

The first half I saw was evenly matched, although the swingometer slowly moved from Thistle to County. The route north closely paralleled the controversial power line from Beauly to Denny. If the constructors are short of a few pylons, then they need look no further than Victoria Park. With the exception of Michael Gardyne (MG Midget?), the team are all giants. When the Thistle defence were rushed and had no option but to punt the high ball, then everything was mopped up and returned with interest by Scott Boyd and his cohorts. However when Hodge and Company kept the ball low and passes and runs were well-timed, promising openings could be made.

Doolan found Donnelly on the edge of the box and when he appeared to shoot accurately, the Thistle fans (as so often over the past few weeks) were halfway out of their seats in expectation of the ball nestling in the corner of the net…before it hit the front of the stand behind the goal. Then a defensive header sat up invitingly for David Rowson and his powerful volley was just too close to the keeper.

County’s delivery from corners was always threatening. Barrowman’s header from close range was scrambled off the line by a combination of Halliwell and Robertson, and, in the first sign of what was to come, Bryn recovered magnificently to block Boyd’s intended shot from the rebound. The action flowed to the other end and Sid would surely have scored if he could have got a full contact on a rare effective cross from Coco.

The Ross County playmaker is as sublime as the Gardyne of Eden. Even when he is playing for the opposition, it is an honour to watch, especially at First Division level, a player so clearly at the top of his game. Michael Gardyne has everything, he can run, he can pass, he can shoot, and he has skill in shedloads. As the catalyst who sparks County from solid to spectacular, hopefully he can display this to the whole nation in the forthcoming Scottish Cup Final and it will be interesting to see where his career takes him. However, Halliwell proved equal to his wrist-stinging volley, even earning an admiring handshake from Gardyne.

At halftime Ian McCall took inspiration from Shakespeare and brought on MacBeth. Having looked at the ineffective Mark Corcoran and asked “Is this a winger I see before me?”, the answer was clearly “No”, and therefore it was decided that “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow” he would no longer creep down the wing at this petty pace. Ryan MacBeth has a similar stooped bearing and slightly hangdog expression to Lionel Messi. We can only hope that some Argentinian stardust has rubbed off, although in style of play he is more reminiscent of Thistle legend and coach Ian Cameron.

The other major halftime switch was by your commentator, moving from the stand via the pie queue to the terracing, to join the cheerful bunch of young diehards who were calling on all and sundry to give them a wave and were all dreaming of a team of Bryan Hodge (to the tune of Yellow Submarine). If Thistle were going to score, I was going to be right behind the goal to see it.

The intensity of the game cranked up a notch for the second period and for a game which did not count for promotion or relegation issues, it is a credit to both teams that they went all out for victory and served up some cracking entertainment for the fans. I reported on the thrilling 2-2 draw between the teams in October 2009 and I thought I would be quoting the second instalment as a reason why we should not make the same trip twice in one season. Despite the trauma of the everlasting journey, that particular part of my pre-match notes was soon torn up. Can we play you every week?

McGovern the Ross County goalie was christened “Ears” for obvious reasons which anti-discrimination laws probably do not allow me to mention, but his lugs were shortly to resound to the thwack of ball on post as a beautiful move involving Corrigan, Erskine and Donnelly ended with an angled drive from David Rowson. I do not know why Rowser was missing when good luck was handed out, but how one man can find so many ways not to score is baffling. Messi Macbeth then shot over from the industrious Rowser’s pass.

However, the Staggies were turning the screw at the other end and Bryn Halliwell was called increasingly into the action, stopping shots and making one Tuffeyesque dash from his line to clear a ball which had breached the defence and was being pursued by an onrushing attacker. Yet there was nothing he could do when, after the ball was neatly served up to him on the edge of the box, Paul di Giacomo expertly (but uncharacteristically for those who recall his dismal loan spell at Firhill) drove it low into the left corner of the net. Please…not another dominate the game, lose one-nil scenario. Thankfully we had only two minutes to wait.

Erskine had been pushed forward to partner Doolan in a novel front line, with Sid slightly withdrawn. When Big Bird was lassooed in mid-flight, Thistle were awarded a free kick just outside the left corner of the box. Conroy was eager to display his non-existent deadball expertise, but was warned off by the Thistle cognoscenti who knew that this was Simon Donnelly territory. Sid ran up and hit the ball with curl and pace. The sign on top of the stand read “one touch changes everything”, and the slightest deflection turned a decent shot into a beast. In an instant the ball had slammed into the bottom corner, some Thistle fans had their tops off and we were trying to remember what a goal celebration felt like.

From playwrights to poets. Burns was introduced into the action to replace Doolan, whose influence was fading. Halliwell foiled Gardyne, but could do nothing as a thunderous drive from Brittain shook the crossbar. The Thistle fans turned from singing “We want a goal”, to “We want the Greek”, and sure enough they were rewarded as Martin Grehan replaced Hodge.

Big Bird had changed nesting places more often than a migrant osprey and he was now despatched to a midfield role behind Simon Donnelly. Strangely enough he put in a disciplined shift in an unfamiliar position, making clearances from his own penalty box as well as being the Erskine Bridge between defence and attack, feeding low balls down the left, evading the County tree trunks and releasing the pace of young Kieran Burns.

Halliwell saved yet again from Gardyne and also from Miller who had put in a tremendous run from right full back, beating player after player. Then came one of the best worked goals of the season. Kieran ran free down the left, doing well to keep the ball under control and bear down towards the goal from the corner of the box. The options were to shoot or to the cross and many inexperienced players would have been overwhelmed by nerves and achieved neither. Burns slid a perfectly weighted pass to Donnelly just left of the penalty spot and he put the ball like moussaka on a plate for the Greek. Martin did not break stride and leathered the ball high into the top left hand corner.

After that the game became the Bryn Halliwell show. From a vantage point at the far end terracing, it was difficult to pick out who was shooting and exactly what was happening, but time and time again the ball seemed to be arrowing into the net and then the leaping figure of Halliwell would suddenly appear to touch it away. He must have packed in at least half a dozen vital saves, aided and abetted by Robbo and Maxi, who were putting their bodies on the line.

One save stands out above all the others. Wood headed a corner off the post. The ball fell a few yards away from goal and two County strikers converged upon it. It seemed inevitable that one or other would roll it into an empty net, but Halliwell produced an amazing hand movement to flick it away at the last second.

Tommy Taylor, Thistle’s official photographer, caused concern by abandoning his usual post behind the goal to which Thistle were shooting, and moving towards the halfway line. Did he sense that all the meaningful goalmouth action was going to be at the other end? Nevertheless, the traffic was not all one way. Thistle were able to lift the siege and provide a threat of their own. Grehan was winning balls in the air and soaking up a lot of punishment from the County rearguard (Absorbent the Greek?) and Burns was tiring them out with his pace and movement. A delightfully delicate Grehan head flick put Kieran through one on one, but Ears the goalie blocked his shot and then watched Messi put the rebound over.

The otherwise immaculate Scott Boyd (why did we ever let him go?) earned a booking for a violent tackle on Burns. In injury time Donnelly again sent Kieran clear. A deserved goal would do so much for his confidence. Yet again McGovern was equal to the task, not once, but twice, saving the first shot and smothering the rebound.

After a few more heroics from Halliwell, the game ended thankfully with Thistle coolly retaining possession deep in the County half. Halliwell received my “Man of the Match” award as well as the ultimate accolade the terracing faithful could accord to a former Clyde keeper.

“O Brynny, Brynny.
He used to be a Gyppo
But he’s all right now!”

Hopefully Ian McCall did not let him get into the post-match bath before he had signed a contract for next year. Jonny Who?

It was Ground-Dog Day with a vengeance for your reporter as for the fourth time in succession this season Thistle dominated the play, but could not score and allowed Dundee to sneak away with three points in their swag bag. Substitute Pat Clarke scored the only goal to arrest the Dee-cline and Fall of Dundee’s promotion hopes.

Last Saturday just before turning into the road leading to Airdrie’s Stadium, Wee Honk and I saw a sign saying “Horse Manure £2”. After paying ten times that sum between us to watch Thistle’s abject capitulation, we turned to each other at the end of the game and said “We should have bought the horse manure”. Yet a lovely spring day (hard to believe that our previous home game had to be postponed due to severe weather) and the optimistic feeling that dreams can come true engendered by Ross County’s stunning conquest of Celtic, meant that I was back in my usual place with hopes of victory well and truly fertilised.

If things had turned out somewhat differently a few weeks ago the managerial teams might have been in opposite technical areas. Ian McCall did his best to shuffle his limited and diminishing pack, and to compensate for the loss of Alan Archibald to injury, by trying out yet another formation, this time a variation on the 5-3-2 theme. Ian Maxwell swept and Paddy Boyle became an auxiliary left central defender, with Ryan Conroy as left wingback. On the other side John Robertson was flanked by Paul Paton.

In midfield David Rowson and Paul Cairney operated as usual with Bryan Hodge in his unique “quarterback” role. Apologies to those who prefer to keep American football terminology out of Scottish soccer, but it is difficult to think of a better description of what Hodge does. While Rowser and Cairney win the ball and drive forward, Hodge takes the ball and retreats, looking for the killer pass, whether to his wide receiving wing backs or audaciously threaded through the middle to his strikers. Mark Corcoran partnered Liam Buchanan up top.

For the sake of completeness I should also mention that Jonny Tuffey was in goals, but partly because the referee had stolen his bright red top and partly because he had less influence on the result of the game that an Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidate has on the result of a General Election, there is nothing more to say about him.

Apart from an error by Maxwell when he bang bang silver hammered a passback much too strongly to concede a corner, the early momentum was mostly with Thistle. Robbo commanded the defence and the midfield was scrapping hard. A period of pressure in the penalty box and the usual cornucopia of corners did not produce any clear-cut openings, though a Hodge drive might have caused trouble if it had not been slammed straight into Corcoran.

The Dundee fans’ main encouragement came from events on a football park 100 miles away as news of a goal for Queen of the South against promotion rivals Inverness Caledonian Thistle galvanised the away support into a chorus of “Hello, Hello, we are the Dundee boys”, swiftly countered by Thistle’s own “Hello, Hello” song, followed up by “Let’s all laugh at Celtic” as a compromise everybody could join in with.

Usually the “Curse of the Programme” means that the player featured on the front page is injured, dropped or plays like a haddock. However, Paul Paton, so disappointing in recent months, was positively inspired and well deserved his Man of the Match award. His feet did let him down occasionally, but he worked up and down the right side of the pitch with passion and determination and reminded us of that youthful enthusiasm and willingness to be involved that used to make him a fans’ favourite.

Paton assisted Paul Cairney in keeping the elephant in the room, Gary Harkins, generally quiet for most of the game. Harkins did annoy the home support by deliberately putting his feet (Robert Pires style) in places which made it look as though he might have been fouled, but after being taken in a few times, the referee wised up to this trick and on one occasion Harkins was left lying on his back to the derision of the home support, vainly appealing as play raged to the other end.

Liam and Coco had shots blocked and a Liam pass nearly played Cairney through. Much good approach play, with Hodge prominent, broke down at the edge of the box. The wee boy behind me asked his dad, “How many substitutes are allowed in a game of ice hockey?” and as we all pondered this off the wall question, Ryan Conroy curled in a free kick which Tony Bullock had to look lively to prevent hitting the top corner of his net. Another corner, so attack over.

Paul Paton angled a beautiful dropping long pass over the Dundee defence. If Liam Buchanan had been Kris Boyd he could have replicated his volley into the roof of the net, but instead he neatly trapped the ball and played it to Cairney on the edge of the box. Three months ago Paul would have first timed his shot into the bottom corner, but in keeping with the general malaise that has afflicted Thistle’s forward play, he wanted a clearer view of goal. He skilfully turned two defenders, but by the time he had the goal in his sights, the ball was not quite sitting properly for him and he stabbed it past the goalie…and the post.

This was Liam’s last involvement. He shipped a fair amount of punishment from Lauchlan and McKeown in the Dundee rearguard, much of this unnoticed by the referee. Eventually his ankle gave way and he hobbled off for treatment on the half hour mark. Physio Kenny Crichton produced the usual “rolling arms” sign from the far corner flag and Simon Donnelly was introduced into the action. While the stretcher bearers took their normal age to get ready, Kenny carried Liam along in front of the Dundee fans (who to their credit gave sporting applause). By this time, Kenny and Liam had got into the groove of the Sunday School outing three-legged race routine and they performed a wonderful sidestep to leave the stretcher party grasping at thin air.

With Coco and Sid now partnered up front, Thistle lacked a natural goal poacher, but the makeshift pairing could not be faulted for lack of effort. Corcoran almost beat Bullock to a through ball from Hodge and fired in some dangerous crosses. Hodge put Coco in again but this time his shot was weak and easily saved. Next it was Paton’s turn to be the supplier and this time Coco’s shot did trouble Bullock.

Simon then assumed centre stage as Hodge unlocked the Dundee defence with an outrageous back flick. Donnelly expertly tipped the ball round the keeper and might have gone down under the challenge. Rightly or wrongly he stayed on his feet, but the angle was against him and the combination of goalkeeper and defender was on hand to block his intended final cross. Finally, as half time approached, the ball broke near to Donnelly in the box, He was always stretching and could only dig out a tame prod which Bullock clutched easily.

At the other end Ian Maxwell assumed the persona of his namesake who plays for Barcelona with a glorious piece of skill to bamboozle an onrushing forward. Colin McMenamin of Dundee, frustrated by lack of opportunity to add to his impressive tally of goals against Thistle, earned a stupid booking for obstructing a kick out.

The second half opened much as the first had closed with Thistle in the ascendancy. Donnelly rather pulled out of the opportunity of challenging the muscular Bullock for a high cross at the end of a promising attack. Then Hodge produced his best long pass of the game to put Corcoran one on one with the keeper. Sadly he snatched his shot wide.

Dundee came more into the game over the next phase. Shinnie crashed to the ground in the box. It seemed to me that he had fallen over the ball and the referee waved away all protests. Dundee’s corners were more threatening than Thistle’s but headers from these still fell wide. Leigh Griffiths, whose BBC blog has been strangely silent over the past month, was introduced from the bench, no doubt hoping for a happier time than on his last visit to Firhill with Livingston, when he had to limp off after kicking the North Stand in frustration.

Normal service resumed with Rowser trying to break his Firhill scoring duck. His reasonable, but hardly vicious, shot was fumbled by Bullock, but there was no predatory striker lurking to apply a finish. Perhaps realising this, Ian McCall brought on the forgotten man (Thistle’s answer to Darius Adamczuk), Kris Doolan, to replace the tiring Mark Corcoran. Doolan looked sharp and hungry. It is a little difficult to understand why he has had so few opportunities this season. Meanwhile Dundee brought on another forgotten man, former Scotland midfielder Colin Cameron, for Andrew Shinnie.

Thistle almost remembered the lost art of scoring as the consequence of a corner kick. The clearing header dropped to Bryan Hodge and his fierce shot from distance skimmed over the crossbar and thudded into the Bing.

Minutes 70 through to 80 were Thistle’s season in microcosm. Doolan looked to be pulled back as he outpaced the Dundee defence, but no free kick was awarded. Then Conroy hung up an excellent cross which Doolan met first time at the far post. Several fans were halfway up in celebration before realising that the shot had hit the side netting.

Then, almost as if to emphasise and rub in the amazing and expensive resources at their disposal, Dundee summoned Pat Clarke to replace the anonymous chap whose surname is full of Ms and Ns. Clarke was a promising First Division striker who has wasted a year of his career sitting on a bench rather than playing football. He has the height of a giraffe and the leap of a kangaroo. On the PTFC official site’s Locker Room Banter Zone posted this week, Bryan Hodge revealed that his favourite animal was a giraffe. He may be revising this now.

In a near replica of Rooney’s goal for Inverness at Firhill a fortnight ago, Griffiths fired in a perfectly timed cross at pace from the left and Clarke, with his first and only significant touch of the game, planted his header firmly into the top corner. A brilliantly executed strike, virtually impossible to defend against, and the sort of goal that Thistle seem incapable of scoring.

Chris Erskine replaced Cairney but was bizarrely assigned to the same defensive midfield role, which he performed birdfully, but at the expense of having any impact at the other end. Both Boyle and Conroy on the left seemed reluctant to cross the halfway line, despite the empty space stretching in front of them. Big Bird needs room to spread his wings. Surely he could have been flying at defenders down the left while others shuffled across to fill the Cairney-shaped gap in the midfield.
Doolan found good space in the Dundee box and unaccountably sought to pass inside rather than take responsibility for shooting. The ten minute summary of Thistle’s season ended as Hodge brilliantly picked out Doolan once again. This time he bore down confidently on goal and cracked a low hard shot past Bullock…and smack into the base of the post.

I could not even call out “Beam me up, Scotty”, as Scotty had been replaced by Doddsy and Chiz. We all now knew that SuperKev McKinlay would retain his title as the last Thistle player to ripple the Dundee net. We could play Dundee forever in some nightmare parallel universe and never score.

There is little left to say. The heads did not drop and Thistle plugged away to the end. The ball fell to Big Bird at the edge of the box and he put in a decent shot, carried wide by a deflection from the lunging Malone. Corner to Thistle. Time to go home.

This was far and away Thistle’s best performance since the excellent win over Dunfermline. The fatal flaw is obvious, but how is it to be addressed? It is not so much that we miss easy chances. Somehow or other goalscoring has to become natural rather than manufactured, the split second between conception and execution has to be eliminated. But how do you coach that?

For the Dens Parkers, promotion is no longer a Dun-deel. To be honest, on today’s showing either Inverness or Ross County would make a far better fist of an SPL campaign. Dundee have completed the Grand Slam over Thistle. But we should meet them again next season and the day of reckoning, justice and divine retribution cannot be forever delayed. There must be a limit to how many “Get out of Jail Free” cards there can be in one game of Monopoly.

According to a poll out this week saying you have no signal is Britain’s most popular lie.
Will it be a lie if we say it will be a big win for the Jags on Saturday and finish off Dundee’s hopes for promotion?

Apparently 1500 little white lies slip out of our lips each year!

Mr. McCall’s team selection will be a last minute one with a few youngsters making the bench and I am sure Jags fans will give a warm welcome to ex-Jags Gordon Chisholm and gorgeous Gary Harkins.

There’s nothing like heading up to Firhill on a Spring/Early summer evening, sitting in the cosy comforts of the Jacky Husband stand and awaiting for the arrival of the worlds greatest team onto the park.OK its not going to happen this Tuesday, but we all can dream. Anyone thinking of attending this Tuesday should also consider bringing their boots as Mr. McCall’s team is down to the bare bones.

Will they be dancing in the streets of Raith on Tuesday night? Or will the Jags fans be having a quiet
drink in the Tavern celebrating our first win over our opponents this season?

Frank Sinatra sang “pick myself up and get back in the race.”Will Thistle pick themselves up and win their next two homes games and get back into the title race? First up is the Inverness Jags this Saturday and a win is a must to keep our slim hopes alive. Lets hope we all will be going down to the Tavern to join in the fun after the game.

Ian McCall could bring in Ian Maxwell for this game, but the rest of the team should be on usual lines.
Richie Foran returns for Inverness and along with Adam Rooney and Johnny Haynes they will form a formidable front line.

Dunfermline Athletic v Partick Thistle
East End Park Dunfermline
Attendance: 2,401

After the “will he, won’t he” saga over the weekend concerning the employment of manager Ian McCall, the Jags headed to East End Park with full focus on on-field matters and in particular, ending a run of 6 away league defeats in a row, the worst sequence since a similar 6-game run brought the end of Gerry Collins’ spell in charge at Firhill.

The view from the main stand of Dunfermline venue where the Thistle fans were housed looks out onto a graveyard, and many Jags’ fans hopes of an away win have been buried here over the years, with our victory last season due to a Gary Harkins penalty being our first in 26 years.

Thistle kicked off towards the “away” end (the small pocket of away fans being housed inside the main stand) showing 3 changes to the side that succumbed in injury time at Cappielow, with Ryan Conroy coming back in at left back allowing Alan Archibald to move into the centre, Bryan Hodge replacing Stephen McKeown, and the much maligned Steve Lovell coming in alongside Liam Buchanan, with Simon Donnelly dropping to the bench.

It was Lovell who was at the centre of the game’s first goalmouth incident with only 3 minutes on the clock. Liam Buchanan picked up the ball inside the box, wormed his way to the byline and cut the ball back. His strike partner couldn’t adjust his feet in time and the ball rebounded off both of his legs and to safety.

Joe Cardle scored a hat-trick the last time the sides met and was in the mood to show what he could do again. Firstly he cut inside Paton and swung in across which Tuffey came for and missed, but probably did just enough in doing so to ensure McDougall’s header went wide. The two former Airdrie men combined again in the 8th minute when Cardle was brought down at the edge of the box, the referee played a good advantage as the ball ran through to the Pars #9 but McDougall, with only Tuffey to beat, went for placement rather than power with his left foot from 16 yards and rolled the ball straight at the Ulsterman.

The next chance game through Cardle again, once again cutting inside onto his right foot (you think we’d have noticed by now), and firing in a low ball that was stabbed just wide of Tuffey’s right hand post by the outstretched leg of Bell.

Dunfermline were doing most of the pressing at this stage with Phinn also playing well, and he set up Cardle in 23 minutes with a slightly fortuitous pass intended for Graham. Cardle showed why he prefers to use his right foot as his swing with the left peg led to a huge slice wide of target from just inside the box.

After all that pressing, Thistle took the lead against the run of play after 26 minutes and with a huge slice (or two) of luck that hasn’t been present for most of the season. A Dunfermline player overran the ball in midfield and Alan Archibald “put his foot through it” as Andy Gray likes to say, with little regard for its direction other than in the opposite direction to the Thistle goal. The ball couldn’t have been more accurate if he tried as it hooked straight to the feet of Liam Buchanan, back to goal just inside the Dunfermline half and with no-one in close attendance due to the speed of the Archibald pass. He turned and headed for goal, and with the defence backing off and the only other option a pass to a wildly off-form Lovell, elected to shoot from 25 yards.

Only Greg Fleming, in goals for Dunfermline, can truly explain what happened next, but the end result was that Liam’s tame shot that was straight at him somehow slipped from his grasp and between his legs as he dived forward, and trundled slowly into the net. 1-0 Thistle.

With Dunfermline a bit at sea after that howler, Corcoran- who turned in an anonymous performance otherwise- volleyed over a Paton cross at the back post, but then it was back to the home side doing the attacking, and with their first real chance since going behind, they equalised 10 minutes before half time. McDougall was played in behind Conroy through the inside right channel and with the on-loan Celtic man sensibly deciding not to concede a penalty and leave us playing 55 minutes with 10 men, McDougall kept his composure to side foot into Tuffey’s right hand corner from 12 yards.

The rest of the first half largely passed without incident, other than Paton picking up a yellow card for giving Joe Cardle an imprint of his studs on his ankle and a fairly ludicrous penalty shout after a swan dive from a Dunfermline player in the box that somehow escaped without a yellow card.

Thistle would have been much the happier to go in level at the break, but changes were needed and a double switch was made at half time with Donnelly and McKeown replacing the invisible Corcoran and the confidence-stricken Lovell.

The changes didn’t immediately halt the pattern of play, as Phinn headed wide just seconds into the half. Phinn was again in the thick of it as he burst into the right hand side of the box 5 minutes later but Tuffey made his best save of the night to deny him. With 60 seconds the same player fooled the Jags defence with a stepover dummy and when he received the return pass he was again given a clear sight of goal but his finish from more or less the same spot as previously was weak and easily held. The movement of Phinn, Graham, Mcdougall, and Cardle was pulling Thistle all over the place and we were given some respite when Graham tweaked a hamstring and had to be replaced.

The best chance of the half thus far fell to his replacement Ross Campbell, when Archibald failed to step up in time and played him onside, leaving him clear on goal from 40 yards. Tuffey came haring out his goal to reach the long through ball, realised he wasn’t going to get it, and stopped on the edge of his 18 yard area. All the striker had to do was lift it over the stranded goalie and into the net- but somehow his lob went well wide.

After another chance went awry for the Pars with a free header from a corner sailing over, Ian McCall made his final change with Chris Erskine coming on for Bryan Hodge in 63 minutes and shortly afterwards Thistle finally began to get a foothold in the game. Erskine and Buchanan linked well, setting Cairney down the right flank. After a couple of twists and turns, his cross took out the goalkeeper and was headed off the line by Woods, as far as Liam Buchanan who fired into the net. The fans’ celebrations were cut short as Cairney’s cross had drifted out of play, a decision that was accurate judging by the players’ reactions.

Less than a minute later, Thistle had their best chance of the half, a Paton cross from the right finding Buchanan 8 yards out, and in a re-run of his chance against Dundee United in this year’s cup, headed straight at the goalkeeper, who wasn’t going to be so generous again and turned the ball over the bar.

Ryan Conroy’s set-piece ability had been talked up when he arrived, but Jags fans have seen precious little of the hype in that respect thus far. However, twice in 2 minutes he fired in-swinging corners at high pace right across the face of goal with only a touch needed for a goal but no takers.

Thistle were rewarded for their spell of pressure in the 81st minute and it started with the tireless David Rowson chasing back 30 yards to win a tackle then Thistle winning 2 or 3 50/50 challenges, Conroy in particular doing well. Conroy laid it forward to Erskine just inside the Dunfermline half, and he ran forward and drew his man before slipping the ball to Donnelly, moving forward 30 yards out. With the left centre-half coming across to cover, Sid knocked the ball out of his feet then lashed a shot from the edge of the D high past the right hand of the helpless Fleming and into the net.

Thistle were then able to wind down the clock with some success thanks to some tireless chasing by Liam Buchanan, who looked close to his best. He even had a half shout for a penalty when he won the ball in the air and then was flattened, however the referee deemed this to be accidental. More good work by Thistle’s number 9 led to him setting up Erskine on the edge of the box, but finishing doesn’t appear to be the lanky winger’s strong point and he tugged his shot well wide.

There was one last scare, when a 92nd minute corner skimmed off a Thistle head, and as a result Bell wasn’t able to get enough on his header to get it on target. The final whistle was welcome relief for the fans who had made the trip more in hope than in expectation.

Standout performers were Buchanan, who worked relentlessly and held the ball up well, Rowson, who covered every blade of grass as per usual, and Robertson, who was in the right place at the right time on a number of occasions. The subs all had a positive impact as well. A slightly lucky win yes, but how many times have we been on the wrong end of such a result this season?
