This was an entertaining encounter which both teams had to win to keep their promotion aspirations alive. On a fairly mild day for the time of year the fans were treated to an exciting end to end encounter that had everything to entertain the neutral fan, close shots, good passing, a controversial sending off and a penalty kick drama. Twenty fours hours ago and after a difficult trip to Inverness you may have been thinking that a draw against the league leaders would not be too bad, but at 4.45 the 2,700 Thistle fans traipsing down the South Drive were in no doubt that this was two points lost rather than one gained in a day that saw parity between the three teams at the top of the table and the Ross County drive keep on going. St Johnstone still look like the team most likely to go up on the basis of their recent unbeaten run but a real logjam is developing from second through to sixth. Read More »

I did not know that I was to be covering this match until around noon when a series of frantic texts arrived from my brother who could no longer make it to the match. As a cub reporter, this was my big chance. Forgive the lateness of this report as I have no previous experience and as I had a drive back throught Glasgow then onto Northampton this was the first opportunity I have had to get the thing together.
I had never visited the Caledonian Stadium before nor indeed Inverness, and saturday was not the day to do so as the weather was terrible. A wet and gusty city with a wet and gusty stadium made me expect the worst. I have seen so many games in the past that failed to take off in terms of excitement when the weather was this dreich. However, I was to be pleasantly surprised by the way the game was played even though the result did not go our way. Read More »

It was a happy New Year in a sad New Town as Partick Thistle came from behind for a well-deserved and ultimately convincing victory over local rivals Clyde, ringing out the disappointing end to 2008 and ringing in the passion and form which could still see a promotion challenge and a cup run in 2009. At this time of year I need a pick me up and this wasn’t it. I am
afraid the celebrations of New year and the result of this match make for a
late and short report. Manager McCall made a couple of changes to the
side he had fielded on saturday; out was the suspended Twaddle along
with Donnelly and Storey, and at the start of the match the team looked
brighter and faster. However it was only to take a quarter of an hour
before the home side had taken the lead.

Auld Rabbie Burns had it right when he suggested that the best laid plans of mice and men are sometimes disrupted by a lack of midfield cohesion, an uncharacteristic hesitancy in defence at key points and tactical ineptitude. Or he would have got it right had he said that and not something more succinct. Read More »

At a Christmas party last week I was sitting next to a Dundee supporter and memorabilia collector – I was telling him that my first Thistle match was Partick thistle 6 Dundee 3. A few days later, he kindly passed me a press photo from that day, with Gerry Britton and Albert Craig joyfully turning towards the Jackie Husband stand after the sixth goal while Jim Duffy dejectedly trots back towards goal. I travelled to Dundee hoping for a similarly entertaining game on this occasion.

In front of a disappointing crowd of only 2,296 Thistle managed to dig out a win to put us six points from the top of the league in third position. Manager McCall chose to bring back Roberts, Storey and Kinniburgh for this match and to reshape the forward line with Roberts lining up beside Buchanan. Read More »
