Partick Thistle 2 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0

After half an hour of this game with the Jags one nil down and an ever increasing misty atmosphere enveloping north west Glasgow it was no wonder that the Firhill shed boys were  letting out a hopeful cr of: ‘yer gonnae have to postpone it we cannae see the game…’ However ten minutes later after new boys Adams and Lovell had put Thistle 2-1 up with two well taken goals this was exactly what they did not want. Instead the ref, McDonald, thankfully decided to give us the full 90,  plus a fog filled five minutes of nervy injury time.

In complete contrast to the sterile 0-0 draw at Firhill a few weeks ago, this was a pulsating encounter played out in bracing weather before enthusiastic supports in a gladiatorial arena. Thistle fought back twice to equalise, but on the balance of play might have been the team more disappointed not to emerge with a win.

With the chance to go top and up against Airdrie, Ian McCall must have emphasized the importance of no slip ups in this game. With a blustering wind and some of the team still suffering from the virus that hampered their performance last week against Inverness thistle.

In the absence of a formal match report I felt that it may be worth reporting on the match day experience as it was for me, as a way of covering this. The day started with the Centenary Gala outside the stadium. This was to celebrate the fact that this was one hundred years since the Dumbarton Harp lined up against us for our first match at Firhill. Organised by the club and manned by the trust, the Gala events I have been told were very well attended. I never saw any of it though, as I was preparing for our match day guests.

Reporter Alan Murray
Referee: Frank McDermott

It was a glorious day in Kirkcaldy. I made my way up on the city center bus, getting into Kirkcaldy at around quarter too two. Plenty of time for me to sample a cheese burger then down to the Starks park Pub for two lovely pints of Stella. Perfect preparation for the game I am sure you will agree.

Partick Thistle 1 v Inverness CT 1 (aet)

Inverness CT won 3-4 on penalties.

When Claudio Ranieri was at Chelsea he was known as the ‘tinker man’ because of his constant experimentation with his team. After the game on Sunday I was beginning to think we have, in Ian McCall, our very own tinker man. How many systems is he going to try before he finds the right blend for his squad of talented players? Last Saturday, against Morton, he ditched the impotent 4-3-3 and went 3-5-2, and what dividends it brought. For Sunday’s Alba cup game against Inverness Caledonian Thistle we could expect the same formation couldn’t we? Well, more or less, but this time Ian tinkered a little bit more- introducing a diamond shape into the midfield with Chris Erskine playing an attacking midfield role just in front of  Rowson and Cairney.
